Editor's Note
Designed in 1951-1952, this building is Istanbul's first international five-star hotel. It opened in 1955 with a grand ceremony attended by Hollywood stars among others. Over the years the hotel, whose architect was Sedad Hakkı Eldem, has hosted world-famous figures such as Sophia Loren, Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. After a construction process carried out in partnership with the firm SOM and Bunshaft, the way was opened for freer and more international architectural designs in Istanbul.
