Editor's Note

This equestrian statue of İsmet İnönü, completed by sculptor Rudolf Belling in 1943, spent decades in storage before it could be erected; it was even found broken and headless at one point. The monument was finally installed in Taşlık Park and unveiled to the public on 24 July 1982, the anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne. Its pedestal bears the text of Atatürk's telegram to İnönü celebrating the Second Battle of İnönü, noting the statue as a gift from the people of Istanbul.
