Editor's Note
The Taksim Military Barracks, also called the Halil Pasha Artillery Barracks, was built in 1806 and stood until 1940 on the site of today's Taksim Gezi Park beside Taksim Square. Beyond its military role, it was used for acrobat shows, horse races, and as lodging for Greek pilgrims. It was demolished in 1940 at the request of governor Lütfi Kırdar and on the advice of urban planner Henri Prost, and Gezi Park was created in its place.
