Editor's Note
A hospital built as a charitable foundation in the Topkapı district of Istanbul. It was commissioned by Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan, the deeply charitable mother of Sultan Abdülmecid. In 1843, seeing that health institutions had proved inadequate following a smallpox epidemic that caused many deaths in Istanbul, Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan, one of the consorts of Mahmud II and mother of Abdülmecid I, wished to build a hospital. The site chosen, between Çapa and Vatan Avenue and then known as Yenibahçe Meadow, was deemed suitable, and construction began. It opened to service in 1845.
