Editor's Note
The L-shaped structure is thought to be an infrastructure element later converted into a cistern. The cistern, whose walls are coated with waterproof cistern plaster and whose chambers are covered by barrel vaults, has openings pierced in places through its upper covering to draw water from it. Because the masonry employs the recessed-brick technique, the building is thought to date to the Middle Byzantine period. The cistern, believed to have been an outbuilding of the nearby Peribleptos Monastery complex, was used for many years as a cold-storage depot.
