Editor's Note
The Martyrion of Carpus and Papylus is a circular-plan underground structure dated to the 4th-5th century, built in memory of the Christian martyrs Saint Carpus and Saint Papylus. It lies beneath the 19th-century Hagia Menas Greek Orthodox Church in the Samatya neighborhood of Fatih district, Istanbul. Because the terrain slopes downward to the south, the north and west sides of the structure remain below ground level, and surrounded by modern buildings it is barely perceptible from outside. Now privately owned, the building is used as a restaurant.
