Editor's Note
It is the largest of the cemeteries outside the walls. Although a third of it was lost owing to the ring road opened on its western side, it is known as the cemetery where Ottoman-era gravestones are best preserved. The greater part belongs to the 18th century and later, and to middle-rank bureaucrats, members of various Sufi orders, and their relatives. Among them are Bâkî, the great 16th-century poet; Şeyhülislam İbn Kemal; the family of Şeyhülislam Dürrîzade; the master of satire İncirli Mustafa Çavuş (d. 1632); and the calligrapher İsmail Zühdî Efendi (d. 1806) (the calligraphy of his gravestone inscription is signed by his brother, the famous calligrapher Mustafa Râkım Efendi).
