Editor's Note
Mehmet Akif Ersoy, born on 20 December 1873 in Fatih's Sarıgüzel neighbourhood, lived in Egypt from 1926 to 1936. He returned to Istanbul on 17 June 1936 and died on 27 December 1936 in Istanbul, in the Mısır Apartments in Beyoğlu. After his funeral prayer was held at the Beyazıt Mosque, he was buried in the Edirnekapı Cemetery. Two years later, after university students had his grave built, he was reinterred in 1960 in the Edirnekapı Martyrs' Cemetery owing to road construction. The place where he was first buried is where the road that passes beside the Edirne Gate, on the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque side, now runs.
