Editor's Note
It is estimated that a number of soldiers who fell as martyrs during the sieges before the conquest of Istanbul were buried in this cemetery, in the district of the same name a little beyond the Topkapi walls. However, the oldest of the 132 Ottoman-era gravestones surviving here today dates to 1626-1627. In one part of the cemetery there are the graves of Muslim French soldiers who died in 1919 during World War I, along with a monument also dating to that year.
