The hospital's planning, staffing and oversight were carried out by Mustafa Behcet Efendi, chief physician to Sultan Mahmud II. Its architect was Krikor Amira Balyan, of the Balyan family and one of the Ottoman court architects. The building has four facades, with a large courtyard in its central section. Its front facade is single-storey, while the other facades are two-storey. The ceilings are quite high, and the rooms and wards are spacious. The hospital served during the cholera epidemic that broke out in Istanbul in 1831 and was used as a quarantine site.
