Begun in 1843 as a modern production centre with technology and machinery imported from Europe, the Zeytinburnu Iron Factory was also the first large and modern facility in terms of heavy industry. It went into operation in 1846. In 1848 it was transferred to the Imperial Arsenal (Tophane-i Amire), and in 1850, with around four hundred workers and full-capacity operation, the focus of cannon production shifted here. The factory was designed to supply all kinds of iron materials for agriculture, infrastructure and new public buildings to be constructed, and to provide processed iron for the blacksmiths' guild.
