Located on the plot directly opposite the Veliefendi Hippodrome in Zeytinburnu, the Akfil Textile Factory was founded in 1955 by Ihsan Mermerci, son of the Mermerci family. Production was completely halted in 2008, after which the factory was sold to Akkoza, then purchased and expropriated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. It is one of the earliest examples of industrialisation in the area. The first traces of industrialisation, the factories, emerged here in this district where traditional crafts such as tanning and spinning had been practised for centuries during the area's urban development.
