Editor's Note
The palace was built by the Byzantine emperors Tiberius II and Maurice. Named after Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and abundance, it served not only for hunting and rest but also as Istanbul's gateway to Anatolia, and is regarded as one of the most important Byzantine structures surviving to the present day in terms of its size and quality. Used as a gathering and lodging area for the Byzantine army, where emperors returning from Anatolia spent their last night before entering the capital, only the palace's vaults, cistern and arches have been salvaged today.
