Editor's Note
Usually called the Istanbul Powder Works in historical documents, the Bakırköy Powder Works operated between 1699 and 1726, but it too was ruined by a great fire. After repairs it resumed operation. During the reign of Selim III (1789-1807) the powder works was placed under the newly established Office of the Superintendent of Gunpowder, yet the gunpowder the sultan wanted produced was not manufactured until 1796. The works was renewed during the superintendency of Mehmet Şerif Efendi, and in the Tanzimat era it was enlarged with new additions.
