Editor's Note
During the Ottoman period, the first attempt at agricultural education came with the founding of the Imperial School of Agriculture (Mekteb-i Ziraat-i Sahane) at Yesilkoy in 1848. However, this school was closed in its second academic year for various reasons. A decree issued in 1867 envisaged the establishment of an agricultural school and a model farm in each provincial centre. Yet no progress was made on this until 1884. With a regulation issued in 1884, efforts to establish an Agricultural School were begun. In those years a General Directorate of Agriculture was set up within the Ministry of Trade.
