Editor's Note
A stone bridge from the Ottoman era in the Fatih neighborhood of Küçükçekmece, where the lake meets the Sea of Marmara. Built in the 16th century, it is sometimes called "Ponte Piccolo" (Small Bridge) in contrast to the Büyükçekmece Bridge. A masonry-and-timber bridge stood here in Roman times, and Mehmed the Conqueror is known to have repaired it for its strategic value. Construction of the surviving structure began under Süleyman I and was completed under Selim II; additions and a flattening of its slope during World War I altered its original architecture.
