Editor's Note
Yarımburgaz Cave is one of the world's oldest inhabited sites. In 2001 the cave was designated a First-Degree Archaeological and Natural Conservation Site. It is of great importance as the site of the earliest human traces found in Europe, with finds thought to date back 600,000 years. It has been established that the human species Homo erectus lived in the cave in groups of 12 to 15, and that in the Byzantine period it was used for religious purposes.
