Editor's Note
A historic Ottoman stone arch bridge in Büyükçekmece, spanning the mouth where Lake Büyükçekmece meets the Sea of Marmara, about 36 km west of central Istanbul. Built by the chief architect Mimar Sinan along the historic route to Europe, construction began in 1566 and the bridge opened in 1567. It comprises 28 spans divided into four sections by small islets, and during construction the lake was reportedly pumped out and 40,000 cubic metres of stone laid. Restored at great cost between 1986 and 1989, it remains a symbol of the district.
