Editor's Note
Although the identity of the person buried in the Kirklar Sultan Tomb cannot be precisely established, various popular legends have grown up around him. He is held to have been one of the disciples of Abdulkadir Geylani (d. 561/1165-66). He is said to have set out with forty followers to take part in the conquest of Istanbul, but was martyred in a clash with the Greeks living in this area and buried there. His grave went unnoticed for a long time, and during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent the Naqshbandi sheikh Kemal Efendi (according to another account, Selim III...)
