Editor's Note

This famous mansion in İstinye Cove on Köybaşı Avenue was built by Monsieur Pigeon, the foreman of the Beykoz Glass Factory. Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem Bey bought it from him, gave it an even more elegant appearance with certain additions, and settled here. Standing at the very start of the row of Yeniköy mansions, beside the İstinye landing, the mansion consisted of three separate brown timber buildings—selamlık, harem, and outbuildings—arranged from the landing inward, and it was furnished with refined taste. Around 1900, Ekrem Bey was forced to vacate it after spies filed a report on him to Yıldız Palace.
