Located 1.5 km inland from the shore, the Bedesten was built in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. It is thought that the structure, originally built as a Roman provincial council hall, later took the name Bedesten (covered market) because it came to be used for commercial purposes. Measuring 18 × 45 metres, it is a five-aisled building.
