Editor's Note
Although the date of its construction is unknown, the building is understood to have been a church. After Murad I captured Edirne in 1352, it was converted into a mosque, and it was here that the first Friday prayer was held. It may well have been the largest church in the city of Edirne. Its name in the Byzantine period is said to have been the Hagia Sophia Church. According to Ahmed Badî, the building stood at No. 38 Keçeciler Kapısı Street inside the citadel and had a dome resting on four arches; instead of a stone minaret, it had a wooden muezzin's gallery in one corner. Its name Halebî came about in the time of Bayezid II.
