Atabey Han was built before 1273 by Husameddin Coban Bey, the founder and first ruler of the Cobanogullari Principality. Situated on the Silk Road and notable for its architectural features, this caravanserai holds a special place among the other hans of Anatolia. However, because of its distance from settlements, Atabey Han fell out of use over time and, through neglect and lack of maintenance, has come close to disappearing. Yet the han was of great importance during the conquest period of Kastamonu. It is thought to have been built by the conqueror of Kastamonu, Emir Husamettin Coban Bey.
