Editor's Note
The first settlement in the natural cavities of Çatalca-İnceğiz and its surroundings began in prehistoric times (5500 BC). Beyond these natural hollows, the İnceğiz caves began to be enlarged by human hand around 1200 BC. The communal life within the caves came to an end with cult and funerary rites in the Maltepe necropolis above. From the 4th century AD onward they served as monasteries, which flourished most in the 11th-12th centuries, gaining additional storeys upward. Of the three-part cave-monastery complex, the most magnificent is the first group.
