Editor's Note
Kumtepe is the oldest permanent settlement in the Troad, the northwestern Anatolian region where Troy was later built. The mound has four layers (Kumtepe IA, IB, IC and II); the last two were largely disturbed in the twentieth century. The relatively undisturbed IA and IB layers are of special interest to archaeologists because they are older than other settlements in the region.
