Editor's Note
Sigeion was an ancient Greek city in the northwest of the Troad in Anatolia, at the mouth of the Scamander (Karamenderes). It controlled a ridge between the Aegean Sea and the river, in the area today known as Yenişehir, part of central Çanakkale. The surrounding headland was called Cape Sigeion, often used as a reference point by ancient geographers because it marked the mouth of the Hellespont; the name, from the Greek word for "silence," means "the silent place."
