Editor's Note
Sile Lighthouse was built in 1859 by the Lighthouse Administration, under a concession granted to the French during Ottoman times, to serve as a route beacon for ships sailing along the Black Sea coast. The largest lighthouse in Turkey, it has a masonry stone tower 110 cm thick, set on cliffs 60 meters above sea level. Its octagonal tower stands 19 meters tall. To be clearly visible by day, the tower is painted in black and white horizontal bands. The lighthouse and the keeper's building are protected as national heritage by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety.
