Acarlar Floodplain Forest, located in northern Sakarya between the Karasu and Kaynarca districts, is the largest single-piece floodplain (flooded) forest in Turkey. It is 250-1250 metres wide and about 7.5 kilometres long, and in its formation it is a typical coastal lagoon. It is bordered by dunes 20-25 metres high toward the Black Sea and by low hills averaging 100 metres in the south. It lies 6 km west of the Sakarya River, into which its excess waters drain via the Okçu stream.
