Editor's Note
The Hüsnü Göktuğ Paşa Mosque is an important structure built by the Genoese in the first quarter of the 14th century as a Catholic church, reflecting the era's Western architectural features with its three-aisled basilical plan. This place of worship, which initially served the Catholic community under the name Saint Eleftherios Church, was handed over to the Orthodox community from the 17th century onward and was converted into a mosque in 1953 by Hüsnü Göktuğ Paşa. Similar to the churches of Sant'Apollinare in Classe and Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Italy, the building has a three-aisled basilica arrangement set on a rectangular plan.
