Cumhuriyet School was completed in 1898 and was built as the Trabzon Primary School (Mekteb-i İbtidaiye) through the efforts of Tevfik Bey, one of Trabzon's Directors of Education. The building carries the distinctive features of the architecture of the reign of Abdülhamid II and is laid out with a plan based on symmetry, as seen in the educational buildings of the period. Built in masonry system with cut and rubble stonework, the school consists of two floors and a terrace floor above a basement. The school's entrance section is three stories and is emphasized by a projecting bay; the side sections are two stories.
