Editor's Note
Photographs of the structure were taken in 1914 by Richard McGillivray Dawkins, who came to the region between 1909 and 1914 to study the Greek dialects of the Black Sea area. The structure also appears among the photographs David Talbot-Rice took in Trabzon; in that collection it is named the "Church near the Monastery of Ayana," and a place name of "Kurt Boghan" (Kurt Boğan?) is also noted. The structure is discussed by Bryer, A. and Winfield, D.
