Vazelon Monastery, also known as the Monastery of St. John Vazelon, lies in the Maçka district of Trabzon, about 40 km south of the city. Built in 270, it was repaired in 565 by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and renovated many times until the 20th century. The structures standing today date from the rebuilding of 1410.
