It was built in 1579 by Lala Mustafa Pasha by order of the Ottoman Sultan Murad III during the rebuilding of the city of Kars. The mosque, situated at the western foot of Kars Castle, underwent considerable repair after the proclamation of the Republic. It is one of the nine Ottoman-period mosques in the city and is owned by the General Directorate of Foundations.
