Kars Grand Mosque (Ulu Camii) stands in the Kaleiçi quarter of Kars. It was built in 1643 by Dilaver Pasha, governor of Kars under Sultan Ibrahim. The mosque was burned and damaged during the Russian occupation following the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War, suffered further damage in the First World War and subsequent earthquakes, and underwent a 1997 restoration that largely erased its original character.
