Editor's Note
The Monument to Humanity was a nearly completed, 30-metre-tall statue in Kars by the artist Mehmet Aksoy. Standing atop Kazıktepe across from the ancient Castle of Kars and visible from neighbouring Armenia, it depicted two halves of a man each reaching to hold the other's hand. After being criticized by then-prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the monument was demolished in April 2011.
