At the Tontar locality, on a low hill called Deliklitaş between Kayseri's Esenyurt Quarter and the northern slopes of Mount Erciyes, the foundation remains of a Byzantine-era church were discovered in 1971 while an electricity pole was being erected. Following this chance find, the Kayseri Museum launched an archaeological rescue excavation that brought the church's foundations to light. The structure uncovered by the excavations has the character of a typical Byzantine church in its plan and architectural features.
