The "Great Garden," which gave its name to the Büyükbahçebaşı neighborhood, is a broad open space that brought airiness and openness to the narrow streets around it. Watered by a fountain at its eastern end, this fertile garden was rented out for growing vegetables. Evliya Çelebi speaks with admiration both of the neighborhood's order and of the beauty of the water feeding the garden. The Büyükbahçebaşı neighborhood, together with its neighbor the Tavukçu neighborhood, was a residential area inhabited mostly by Christian families.
