Editor's Note
The Karakuyu Cistern is an important water structure standing within the first city walls of Kayseri, which began to be built in the late 4th century AD during the reign of the Eastern Roman emperor Arcadius (AD 395–408), and it may therefore have been built in the same century. This first line of walls, about 6 km long and enclosing an area of 240 hectares, is thought to have started at Battalaltı and run through the Caferbey and Gülük neighborhoods, Düvenönü, Cumhuriyet Square, Yoğunburç, and the Kartal Junction before returning to end at Battalaltı.
