Editor's Note
Although the founding date of this castle is unknown, it was probably built in the twelfth century, when the Bagratids decided to move the capital of their kingdom to Şirakavan. The name Tignis appears in an inscription of 1262 in the church of Bagnyar. Commanding the valley of the Karahan Stream, this imposing castle had a square plan and was surrounded by high walls with eight towers. Of these, only the tower of the southern wall and part of the northern wall survive today. Its destruction accelerated in the nineteenth century, when villagers used many of its stone blocks to build their houses.
