Editor's Note
The Dinkhane (fulling house), 1832-1833, was built in Izmit to carry out the fulling process, one of the fundamental stages in the production of the fez. Fulling is a process based on beating the cloth in a mixture of hot water and soap, and it has been applied to various fabrics since very ancient times. As part of the production of the fez, a woolen headwear, the imperial Feshane (Feshane-i Amire) made use of this Dinkhane in Izmit for many years. Fezzes knitted in Istanbul were sent by ship to Izmit for fulling, with the transport handled by porters.
