Editor's Note
It was built by Mehmet Bey, the steward (kethuda) of Suleiman the Magnificent. Because it so closely resembles the style of the architect Sinan, some sources attribute it to him, but the prevailing view is that it was the work of one of Sinan's pupils. The building has a monumental character, but unfortunately the sources contain very little information about its history.
