Editor's Note
The 700-year-old Orhan Gazi Cuma Mosque, located within the boundaries of the Karaçalı neighborhood, was built in 1323 during the reign of Orhan Gazi, when Düzce and its surroundings were annexed to Ottoman territory. It was built without nails, in what is called the "çandı (log) type," by the Manav Turks who settled in this densely forested area from the Sarıçökek village of Kaynaşlı, by notching the tree logs into one another. Following the work of the Bolu Museum Directorate in 1997, the mosque was determined to date from the Orhan Gazi period; it was restored and reopened for worship with prayers in 2013.
