Editor's Note
The 'Sakarya Bridge', said to have been commissioned by the Minister of Public Works of the time, Ali Çetinkaya, 'on Atatürk's personal order,' was built in 1936-37. It is likely that in July 1934, while traveling by road to Adapazarı via Bolu, Atatürk crossed the wooden Tavuklar Bridge, now located near Kumköy, saw its inadequacy, and gave the order for 'the construction of a sturdy and safe concrete bridge.'
