Editor's Note
The Sultan Orhan Mosque was first built of wood in the 1330s by Gazi Suleyman Pasha in honour of his father Orhan Gazi, and according to its inscription it served in this form for five or six centuries. Later, however, it fell into ruin, and in 1887 it was rebuilt from its foundations into its present form by Sultan Abdulhamid Han. In 1956 its roof was raised and it underwent renovation by benefactors. The Orhan Mosque standing today is this building. Its restoration was begun by the General Directorate of Foundations, and the mosque was planned to reopen for worship in October 2011.
