Editor's Note
Built by architect Robert Oerley, this building was one of Ankara's important health institutions and opened in 1929 as the General Directorate of the Red Crescent. In the early years of the Republic, it gave its name to the park that opened toward the large square—later known as Hürriyet Square—where Atatürk Boulevard met Ziya Gökalp Avenue. Known as Havuzbaşı, this park was one of the cleanest and best-kept in the city. Many sources note that it was heavily used from the early years of the Republic onward.
