According to information drawn from historical sources, the history of Rousion (Keşan) Castle is understood to reach back to the first half of the 5th century. The castle was actively used in the 9th and 10th centuries and appears in episcopal lists as an autonomous bishopric. In the 12th century Rousion was one of the well-known fortified towns of southeastern Thrace. The hill on which Rousion (Keşan) Castle stands commands the entire area, including the plain where the present town of Keşan lies and the lower hill masses around it.
