It was built upon the proclamation of the Republic in 1923. The Ottoman-script inscription on it bears a poem: "Freed from the oppression of the Greeks, they built the Republic Fountain. The triumphant commander gave his effort; for the lasting of his name he became its captive. The faithful made it a memorial. How charming, look, is the drinking of this water."
