ISTIKLAL NEIGHBORHOOD. Before the War of Independence, Greeks and Turks lived together here. But during the 1923 population exchange, the Greeks left, and in their place our kinsmen who came from Salonika and its surroundings, from Bulgaria and Yugoslavia, were settled in the homes the Greeks had vacated. Reflecting the district's historic fabric, 120 houses have been registered and placed under protection by the Monuments Council. These buildings are two or three stories high and made of wood and adobe. The wooden doors have knockers and open onto a courtyard after a wide hall.
