Editor's Note
Hacı Beşir Ağa, a benefactor who protected scholars, served as a courtier, became royal treasurer in 1707, later Sheikh of the Harem, and Chief Eunuch of the Imperial Harem (darüssaade ağası) in 1717; he died in 1746. In Istanbul he had a mosque, a madrasa, a dervish lodge, a public fountain, a library, and more than ten fountains built. According to the inscription on the fountain that leans against the courtyard wall at the southeast corner of the Emir Sultan Mosque, Beşir Ağa also had the Emir Sultan Mosque and its tomb repaired.
