Editor's Note
The founder of the mosque was Zenci Ebubekir, son of Hüseyin, the Sheikh of the Arabs in Istanbul. It is said that he built the mosque with funds collected from the tributes of freed slaves. For this reason it came to be known as Azap Bekir. According to some sources it was built in 1512. Its walls are built entirely of rubble stone, and the upper part is covered by a hipped roof. The main prayer hall has a wooden ceiling and, together with the porch on the north side, forms a rectangular structure. It underwent a major repair after the 1855 earthquake and has lost part of its original architectural character.
